When light falls on an object the true colors aren't what they appear to be at first glance. I look closely at my subject, whether it’s an interior scene, outdoor landscape, or still life, and my goal is to see the hues and reflections that aren't always obvious. Winter cast shadows are blue, the sky is grey, and the grass is yellow. Sometimes my choices in paint hues and saturation are exaggerated, however the scene is real and my goal is to represent what’s really there and still use a painterly approach.

Many of my most recent paintings reference neighborhoods and surrounding landscape. In these works I highlight one particular part of the subject area and focus on how it can stand independently. It can be a lone tree in a field, a building’s rooftop, or a large cast shadow on a quiet street. The subject matter isn't complicated or where one needs to interpret its meaning. I paint to express a mood and to show simple moments that are sometimes overlooked.

I work in acrylic paint and use a variety of surfaces. I take time to consider what feel I’m going after in the work and let that dictate what surface I choose. I’m fastidious about mixing paint. I spend half of my time with the pallet knife mixing the right hues before one stroke is applied. My professor once said a painter should spend at least as much time, if not more, mixing paint than applying it. Since acrylic is currently my medium of choice, I have the luxury of adding layer after layer very quickly. My approach is to have these layers stand out and not blend together. Each stroke is important and I make them obvious. What’s fun for me is how this technique can sometimes cause the work to appear flat, and other times it gives the painting depth.
